India Heritage Day - August 15, 2012 Proclamation by City of Irvine given to Sanjay B Dalal and the Indian Community

I would like to share what I spoke today on the occasion of the City of Irvine proclaiming India Heritage Day at the Irvine Civic Center:

"Dear City of Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang, Honorable Irvine City Council Members, Irvine City Staff, and Residents:

It is indeed a great honor to stand here in front of you and celebrate the 65th Independence Day of my mother country India, the largest democracy, along with my parents, my family, my Indian friends and greater Irvine community residents.

On behalf of the Indian community, we want to thank Mayor Kang and his staff who gave their enthusiastic support for today's proclamation.

My parents were still growing up when India achieved independence from England on August 15, 1947! They shared with me stories and battles of our legendary freedom fighters - Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose and more during my childhood! My grand parents were directly involved in India's Independence Fight, and even went to Pune jail in 1943. My grandmother was a pioneer, and led the Nadiad municipal council for 18 years, launched the Women's' Community and worked with Gandhiji and Sardar Patel.

Indian prime minister Dr. Manhoman Singh has overseen the expansion of modern Indian economy to over $1 Trillion and a growing middle class of over 300 million people. India still has many challenges including poverty, corruption, terrorism, and communal violence. However, Indians, like Americans, have an indomitable spirit, and believe that any challenge can be overcome with sound governance and great attitude.

Many of us moved to the world's greatest democracy USA in search of the American Dream. I moved here in 1987 for my education and have since then become a naturalized citizen. I got married on August 15, 1993 right here in Orange County, have a caring wife and two wonderful children, and am working hard to grow my latest startup oGoing.

We, the Indian community, thank the City of Irvine, California and America for the tremendous opportunities, great education, entrepreneurship, beautiful surroundings and peaceful society.

We would like to present to the Irvine Mayor and Council Members a small memento that symbolizes India's ancient culture."
